Call for Papers ‘Labour and value in digital economies’

2026-04-09

The center of cooperation RUB/IGM will be represented at the 43rd Congress of the German Sociological Association in 2026. Together with Sophie Rosenbohm and Fabian Beckmann (Institute for Work and Qualification) and Lukas Underwood (Sociological Research Institute Göttingen (SOFI) e.V.), Fabian Hoose is organising the ad hoc group “Labour and Value in Digital Economies”.

Digital economies challenge established sociological understandings of work, value creation and market organisation. In this context, activities, products and services are emerging whose labour-related character, economic value or social recognition are unclear, contested and context-dependent. Alongside platform work, other fields are entering the spotlight – such as content creation, AI-related activities, digital art markets and gaming economies. In these areas, hybrid, often precarious yet highly dynamic forms of work and value generation are emerging.

The ad hoc group aims to bring together researchers who are examining these developments from the perspectives of the sociology of work and the sociology of the economy. We welcome theoretical and empirical contributions on topics including:

  •     Markets, value and processes of value creation
  •     New forms of digital work
  •     Subjectification and ways of life
  •     Regulation and institutionalisation

The deadline for submissions is 30 April 2026.
